Of Hospitals and Housekeepers: A Tribute to Healthcare Workers
As we’ve been spending time lately honoring and praying for the healthcare workers on the front lines against the coronavirus, I’ve been thinking about the members of my own family who were involved in healthcare in some way. My paternal grandmother was a nurse. I don’t remember much about her because she died when I was in kindergarten, but here’s what I remember. She had shockingly white hair, she loved to play the piano, and she never stopped smoking. I can still remember staring in fascination at the ash hanging off the end of a cigarette held firmly in her mouth as she played away on her giant (to me!)…

Thoughts from Scrooge in A Christmas Carol
Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, the classic Dickens story, sees a ghost. Skeptic that he is, he does not believe what he sees. When the ghost asks him why he doubts his senses, he replies: . “Because, a little thing affects them. A slight disorder of the stomach makes them cheats. You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. There’s more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!” . Scrooge was making a valid point. Our thoughts and perceptions can be influenced by what we ingest. That is why we have laws…

Beauty is not about how you look
Beauty is not about how you look. Beauty is about how you feel, and how you project yourself to the world. You might think that beauty starts with the right hair style, or the right clothes, or a really great mascara. Nope. Maybe you think that beauty starts and ends in the eye of the beholder. Wrong again. Your beauty begins between your ears, in your own mind, your thoughts, and your attitude toward yourself. Beauty is as Beauty thinks While it is true that “Beauty is as Beauty does,” it is also true that Beauty is as Beauty thinks. Shakespeare’s Hamlet says, “There is nothing either good or bad…

Depression is a Disease
Depression and other mental health issues have been in the media a lot lately. I know firsthand that depression must be taken seriously and battled with all the weapons in our modern arsenal. The graphic below was created to give a small idea of what depression is like for those who suffer with it. Depression is a disease, just like cancer. It is malignant and wants to kill me. So stop expecting me to snap out of it. Help me, please. I want to live, even though I feel like I want to die. If you know someone who is suffering with depression, be patient and understanding without being judgmental.…

Spring is on its way!
Hooray! As of February 4, winter is officially half over and spring is on its way! The days here are already getting longer. Soon we will be moving our clocks ahead and sacrificing our annual hour of sleep to Daylight Savings Time. Now, please don’t get me wrong. I love winter. I am a Canadian, so I am used to cold, snow, ice, and dressing for the weather. I love the cool, blue light that reflects off the snow on a sunny day. I love how beautiful the snow can make a dead autumn landscape. I love winter clothing. The cozy sweaters, the warm scarves, the multiple layers that can…

Caffeine Induced Insomnia – Sleep Deprived Again!
After extolling the virtues of good sleep hygiene and warning of the dangers of caffeine and video screens in my last post (all about how to sleep well… Oh, the irony!…), I myself have fallen victim to the curse of too much coffee and too little sleep. Coffee is now my enemy. It started out innocently enough with an early morning business meeting. The waiter at the restaurant brought coffee for everyone, and it was delicious. As I am always thirsty in the morning, I had a second cup with my breakfast. If only I had stopped there! But no… I had another cup of coffee at lunch. And that…
